Herringfleet Drainage Mill Norfolk Near Somerleyton. The village of Herringfleet has long since disappeared. An old Saxon riverside village which was settled by the Saxon Herla family and his sons. Ing is saxon for offspring and Flet is a tidal waterside settlement, hence we get Herringfleet, nothing to do with Fleets or Herring. It's a wild windy walk across the oft times ghostly marshes and very wet under foot even in the summer. Alight off the train at Haddiscoe or Somerleyton, leave the car behind as there is nowhere to park. Good watering holes nearby are The Dukes Head at Somerleyton and The Bell in in St Olaves, the nearest village to Haddiscoe station.
