A day in Newcastle
and surrounding area
A rainy day over the Tyne on the
ferry via North and South Shields in July 2007.
How many old Geordies have made this crossing to work in the now long gone ship yards -what memories -what ruins -what future? The young today may not know the hardships of the past, but they are better off than their fore fathers ever were. Not many passengers on the ferry but this is mid day and the crossing is used a lot at peak hours. Three vessels are used in the operation, which is worked by NEXUS -the Tyne & Wear Public Transport Network. How long before the bridge or tunnel arrives?

Back at the Lynton and Barnstaple on 14 April 2007, two steam locomotive were at work.
The regular engine seen here is Bronllwyd approaching Woody Bay station at 13.18.
The railway has extended to Killington Lane and is now waiting funds to go beyond to Cricket Field Lane and Parracombe hopefully starting in 2009.
For further details please visit www.lynton-rail.co.uk or better still visit the railway off the A39 Barnstaple to Lynton Road.

St Helen's Church Ranworth, which many consider the cathedral of the Norfolk Broads.
It has a certain beauty and a tower which you can climb when open (most days during the summer season)
and view a 360 degree scene across the broads -well worth the visit as there is a nice church side tea room as well.

The road to the Sani Pass, from the South African town of Underberg to Lesotho. This is not a journey for the faint hearted as the road is unmade, unmetaled, more potholes than track, very steep with blind bends and only accesible on 4 x 4 vehicles and then only on a good day. However, the views are second to none. This is the view after crossing the border from SA into Lesotho with the Twelve Apostles mountains in the background. When at the highest point, there is a bar - the highest pub in Africa at 9445 ft above sea level.
